Natural Remedies for the Signs of Aging

Some people seem to be better at aging than others. I’m sure you’ve met people your own age or close to it, and they don’t appear to be showing any obvious signs of aging–no gray hairs, physically fit, and still mentally sharp. Don’t let appearances fool you. A person may seem to be standing still in time, but they’re likely doing something to help themselves—they just haven’t told you about it.

Some people are genetically inclined to not show any overt signs of aging, but rest assured that they’re getting older. Even if it doesn’t show on the outside, our bodies’ know what time it is. Even those few who seemingly stay the same age for decades will hit a wall at some point and the signs of aging will kick in.

If you do happen to be the oldest person in the room, you don’t want to look like it. It’s always nice when you tell someone your age, and they are surprised that you’re that old. That reaction has a lot to do with how you look. Your skin and your hair will tell your age faster than anything else. Does your skin sag or have age spots? Is your hair thinning or gray? These sings of aging are dead giveaways.

Problems with skin and hair are common as we age, but luckily there are many natural remedies and nutritional supplements that can help. Most of them are not all that expensive either. For instance, take the problem of gray hair. You can always buy a natural product like henna to color your hair. The benefit is that unlike commercial hair dye, there’s not much risk of an allergic reaction. Another option is to take the herb fenugreek which has a long and safe history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Thinning hair is also common as we age. Again, henna helps with this since it coats the hair shaft and makes hair appear thicker. Acupuncture can help as well, but one of the cheapest remedies is onion juice. Simply applying the juice to your scalp will help promote hair growth over time.

Another area where age shows up is our skin. We produce less collagen as we age. Because of this our skin can start to sag and appear less plump. To make matters worse, years of sun exposure can show up as age spots or freckles that appear randomly on your face or hands. The age spots are melanin which is the body’s way of protecting us from cancer, but it’s not very attractive. You can help yourself out by wearing a sunscreen everyday—no matter if it’s sunny or not.

Many anti-aging products contain collagen which is supposed to be used topically. Collagen is great, but I recommend using it internally. Adding to your blended drinks or juice is a great way of giving your body what it needs. I find it has no taste to speak of, but my hair and skin certainly appreciate the extra boost.

Lastly, I’d like to mention vitamin C serums as a remedy for aging skin. Most people know that vitamin C is a great antioxidant that fights free radicals. It can increase collagen formation and give visible improvement to wrinkled skin. However, the way it’s used in most skin care products makes it useless. The skin cannot absorb vitamin C unless it’s in the form of L-ascorbic acid. Products containing the vitamin C derivatives Ascorbic Acid, ascorbyl palmitate, or magnesium ascorbyl phosphate will not be absorbed topically.

  2. I think collagen is very important. I am taking more collagen pills to keep up my beauty regeimn.

  3. Fenugreek seed sounds interesting. I will google that I think. Anything natural seems like it could be a good idea at times, depending on your tolerance also for natural herbs and oils and minerals etc. Mostly I try to limit the sun exposure here and hydrate like mad.

    I think it’s important to use all-natural ways of improving our health and looks whenever possible. Man-made chemicals are terrible for you and surgery is so invasive.
